Lifestyle Changes Keep At-Risk Minds Sharp in Landmark Trial

1

The Summary

The LatAm-FINGERS randomized controlled trial investigated a culturally adapted, multidomain lifestyle intervention in 1065 Latin American adults aged 60 to 77 at risk for dementia. Over two years, participants in the structured lifestyle intervention (SLI) group received supervised nutrition, physical exercise, and cardiovascular health monitoring. Compared to those receiving flexible health advice, the SLI group showed significantly greater improvement in global cognitive composite scores. This trial demonstrates that structured, culturally tailored lifestyle programs are both highly feasible and effective at preserving cognitive function in historically underrepresented populations.

Why this is interesting

Dementia prevention research has historically focused on high-income nations, leaving diverse populations in low- and middle-income countries underrepresented. This study proves that culturally adapted lifestyle interventions work remarkably well in Latin America, where dementia burdens are high. For readers, it delivers an empowering message: structured, proactive changes in diet, exercise, and vascular health are accessible, practical, and highly effective tools to actively protect your mental sharpness as you age, regardless of where you live.
