Can Creatine Speed Up Recovery From Jumper's Knee?

1

The Summary

Researchers conducted a triple-blind RCT on 20 federated athletes with patellar tendinopathy to see if creatine enhances rehab. All participants underwent an eight-week physical therapy program consisting of eccentric training, stretching, manual therapy, and shock wave therapy. Participants were randomized to receive either creatine or a placebo daily. While both groups achieved reduced tendon thickness and increased leg strength by week eight, only the creatine group experienced significant pain relief by week four. Additionally, the creatine group showed unique, ongoing improvements in explosive jump performance.

Why this is interesting

We usually view creatine as a tool for building muscle, not healing injuries. This study suggests it may also act as a recovery accelerator for stubborn tendon issues like jumper's knee. For athletes, the most promising finding is the accelerated timeline: creatine users experienced significant pain relief in just four weeks—half the time of the placebo group—while also boosting explosive jump power. This suggests that incorporating this widely available aid into standard physical therapy could safely get injured athletes back in the game much faster.
