1

The Summary

This meta-analysis synthesized data from 50 randomized controlled trials on patients with obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. It compared the effects of vitamin D2, vitamin D3, and active vitamin D. The results showed that vitamin D3 and active vitamin D significantly reduced visceral (belly) fat, improved fasting glucose, lowered insulin resistance, and decreased LDL cholesterol. Vitamin D2, however, showed no significant effect on these health markers. Benefits were greatest at doses of 2000 IU/day or more for at least six months, particularly in individuals with low baseline vitamin D levels.

Why this is interesting

It's often assumed that all vitamin D supplements are the same, but this research proves the specific type matters greatly for metabolic health. This study clarifies that vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the form most commonly sold and made by your skin from sunlight, is superior to vitamin D2 for combating the health issues linked to obesity. For individuals managing their weight and metabolic health, choosing a D3 supplement is a more effective, evidence-based strategy than opting for D2.
