Breastmilk Prebiotic Helps Adults Manage Ulcerative Colitis

1

The Summary

In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 38 patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC) received either the prebiotic 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) or a placebo for 28 days, followed by a crossover. While 2'-FL did not show clear effects on standard clinical indices, patients reported significantly improved disease control. Additionally, 2'-FL markedly increased beneficial Bifidobacterium abundance in the gut and favorably altered fecal metabolite profiles related to carbohydrate metabolism, suggesting modulated host-microbial interactions.

Why this is interesting

Traditionally, human milk oligosaccharides like 2'-FL were thought to only benefit infant development. This study is exciting because it shows these complex sugars can also reshape the adult microbiome, specifically targeting inflammation in ulcerative colitis. For patients, this means prebiotics naturally found in breastmilk could offer a safe, dietary strategy to support conventional UC treatments, boost protective Bifidobacterium, and enhance daily quality of life.
