Slowing Biological Aging with Therapy for Insomnia

The Summary

This study analyzed data from a randomized controlled trial of 92 older adults (aged 60+) with insomnia. Researchers compared cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to a control group receiving sleep education therapy (SET). Blood samples taken at baseline and up to 30 months later were analyzed using epigenetic clocks to measure biological age. The CBT-I group not only had higher rates of insomnia remission (34% versus 13%) but also showed a significantly slower pace of biological aging, measured by the DunedinPACE clock, compared to the sleep education group.

Why this is interesting

Historically, we knew poor sleep accelerates aging, but we didn't know if treating sleep disorders could reverse or halt this process.
