Analyzing over 7,000 plasma proteins in 60,542 individuals, researchers developed machine learning models to determine the biological age of 40 different cell types. They discovered that 20% to 25% of people experience accelerated aging in at least one cell type, which strongly predicts specific diseases and mortality over a 15-year period. For example, accelerated astrocyte aging combined with the APOE4 gene tripled Alzheimer's risk, while aged muscle cells drastically increased ALS risk.
