Using data from the Nationwide Children's Hospital Sleep DataBank, researchers matched 342 pediatric melatonin users with 342 non-users based on age, sex, BMI, and comorbidities. Using objective polysomnography (PSG) sleep tracking, the study found that children taking melatonin had a significantly lower median percentage of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (16.7%) compared to non-users (19.0%). Other sleep metrics, such as total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and non-REM sleep stages, showed no significant differences. The association remained even after adjusting for psychiatric diagnoses like ADHD, anxiety, and depression.
Why this is interesting
Melatonin is widely given to children, but we've lacked objective data on how it impacts their actual sleep architecture. REM sleep is crucial for pediatric brain development, learning, and memory consolidation. While this study doesn't prove melatonin causes this reduction—and the drop is small—it suggests the popular sleep aid may subtly alter sleep quality rather than just boosting quantity. For parents, this highlights the importance of consulting a pediatrician before using melatonin, rather than viewing it as a completely neutral, risk-free supplement.
