The Summary
In a post hoc analysis of the SURPASS-CVOT randomized clinical trial, researchers compared the cardiorenal effects of tirzepatide and dulaglutide in 13165 adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Over a median of nearly 47 months, patients taking tirzepatide had a 16% lower risk of a composite cardiorenal outcome—including death, heart attack, stroke, heart failure hospitalization, and kidney decline—compared to those on dulaglutide. However, tirzepatide was associated with slightly higher rates of gastrointestinal side effects.
Why this is interesting
While both drugs manage blood sugar, this study shows that tirzepatide's dual-hormone action provides significantly greater protection for the heart and kidneys than standard GLP-1 therapy alone. Previously, many assumed these medications offered similar cardiovascular benefits. For individuals with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, this means tirzepatide is not just a tool for glucose control, but a highly effective shield against life-threatening cardiac and renal events, helping patients and doctors make more protective treatment choices.
