The Summary
In a 12-month follow-up of a randomized controlled trial, researchers evaluated 99 adults with overweight or obesity who underwent a 12-week time-restricted eating (TRE) intervention. Participants were assigned to early TRE (eating before 10:00 AM), late TRE (eating after 1:00 PM), self-selected TRE, or usual care. All groups received Mediterranean diet education. At 12 months post-intervention, those in the early and late TRE groups maintained significantly greater weight loss compared to the control group, suggesting that even temporary TRE programs can have lasting weight-management benefits.
Why this is interesting
While we know intermittent fasting helps drop pounds, keeping them off is notoriously difficult. This study shows that even a brief 12-week stint of time-restricted eating pays off long after the active intervention ends, regardless of whether you fast in the morning or evening. Interestingly, participants sustained weight loss even though only 26% continued the fasting routine during the follow-up period. For the reader, this means you don't have to commit to strict, lifelong fasting schedules to enjoy lasting metabolic and weight-management perks.
