In a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, 14 male rowers performed 2000-meter ergometer time trials under four conditions: caffeine, paraxanthine, a combination of both, or a placebo (200 mg each). The combination of caffeine and paraxanthine produced the fastest completion times and highest power output. While caffeine-containing trials led to poorer subjective sleep quality, paraxanthine alone resulted in significantly better sleep outcomes. This suggests that paraxanthine may act as a gentler, more sleep-friendly alternative to traditional caffeine.

Caffeine is the ultimate pre-workout booster, but it notoriously wrecks sleep, especially for evening trainers. This study introduces paraxanthine—caffeine's primary metabolite—as a game-changer. Previously, we assumed caffeine was the only way to get an ergogenic edge. Now, we see that paraxanthine provides a more tolerable, sleep-safe alternative. For athletes who struggle with caffeine-induced insomnia, switching to paraxanthine could offer the perfect balance: maintaining athletic performance during late workouts without sacrificing critical overnight recovery.
