Can a Multi-Strain Probiotic Help Improve Fatty Liver?

In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 64 patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) received either a placebo or a specific four-strain probiotic mixture for 12 weeks. Researchers tracked changes in liver health markers, including the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index and fatty liver index (FLI). Patients taking the probiotic showed significant improvements in FIB-4 scores and liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase) compared to those on the placebo, whose markers worsened. However, no major changes were seen in overall liver fat indices, body measurements, or glucose levels, suggesting a targeted benefit.

Why this is interesting

For years, scientists have suspected the gut-liver axis plays a key role in fatty liver disease, but finding practical therapies has been challenging. This study provides direct clinical evidence that modulating gut bacteria with a targeted probiotic can actively reduce markers of liver scarring and cell damage in just three months. While it is not a magic cure-all for weight loss or cholesterol, it offers a simple, non-invasive daily tool to help slow or reverse liver damage, highlighting the gut microbiome's powerful influence on metabolic organs.
