Can a Powdered Meal Replacement Boost Muscle and Heart Health?

1

The Summary

In a 12-week randomized controlled trial, 63 adults with excess weight consumed either their usual diet or added two daily doses of a soy-yogurt-honey powdered meal replacement, maintaining stable body weight. While the supplement did not reduce the inflammatory marker IL-6 or significantly alter gut microbiota, it yielded unexpected benefits. Participants using the meal replacement experienced an increase in lean muscle tissue alongside a significant reduction in both total and LDL cholesterol, driven by an overall increase in protein and a decrease in dietary fat intake.

Why this is interesting

Typically, meal replacements are used strictly for weight loss. This study shifts the paradigm by showing that adding a nutrient-dense powder can improve body composition and cardiovascular markers even when weight remains completely stable. It suggests that optimizing protein-to-fat ratios can boost lean muscle and lower bad LDL cholesterol. For readers, this means high-quality meal replacements might serve as a convenient tool for targeting metabolic and heart health, independent of shedding pounds.
