Diet and Intermittent Fasting Help Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

1

The Summary

In this 6-month randomized controlled trial (the DIREM study), 120 participants with type 2 diabetes were split into three groups: calorie-carbohydrate restriction (CCR), CCR combined with intermittent fasting (IFCCR), or usual care. After a 12-week lifestyle intervention followed by a 12-week maintenance phase, 30% of the IFCCR group and 22.5% of the CCR group achieved diabetes remission, compared to just 2.5% of the control group. Both dietary interventions significantly improved glycemic control and induced remission, with no statistically significant difference in efficacy between the two restricted diet groups.

Why this is interesting

For years, type 2 diabetes was considered a progressive, lifelong disease manageable only by medication. This study adds to the growing evidence that targeted lifestyle interventions can actually reverse the condition. Crucially, it shows that while adding intermittent fasting to calorie and carb restriction offers a slight edge in remission rates, standard calorie and carb reduction is nearly as effective. For readers, this means you do not necessarily have to endure strict fasting windows to achieve diabetes remission; a structured, sustainable reduced-carb, reduced-calorie diet can be just as life-changing.
